The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a reminder for disaster victims. As a matter of fact, this notice is for taxpayers who are currently living in 12 States and who suffered the consequences of a disaster. As a result of these terrible events, the Agency has provided them with automatic extensions to pay and file their 2024 taxes.

This reminder is for both businesses and individuals in all the areas which were covered by a disaster declaration in the previous year, 2024. Therefore, they will have additional time to deal with their 2024 tax returns. In this way, they have had more time to save money and to gather all the documents they may have lost due to the disaster.

IRS deadline for areas covered by disaster declarations

Although most taxpayers had the April 15, 2025, deadline, the Internal Revenue Service has provided disaster victims with the Thursday, May 1, 2025, deadline. Thus, their 2024 Federal income tax returns as well as tax payments must be filed and paid before the deadline is over. In this way, disaster victims will avoid penalties, interest and fees.

For your information, the Internal Revenue Service usually provides disaster victims with tax relief. This tax relief includes putting off various tax payments and filing deadlines. However, it is always best to ensure that you qualify.

This tax relief is only possible in areas designated by FEMA. FEMA stands for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those taxpayers whose address of record is in a disaster area locality, business and individual taxpayers automatically get the extra time without having to ask for it.
